1. Eligible’ means only those American Express retail merchants in Canada whose primary business is within the specified category. Not every merchant where you dine or buy gas or groceries is eligible. The cash back earn rate is 1.25% of your Card purchases (and not 5%) in the following situations:
• Purchases at superstores, wholesale clubs, alcohol retailers, general merchandise merchants, convenience stores and other merchants whose business is not limited to the eligible categories, Food purchases at specialty retailers such as bakeries, butcher shops, fish markets and health food stores, Gasoline purchases that are not for retail or automobile gasoline, Purchases for dining within a retail store, hotel, pub, bar, club, lounge or other merchant that is not categorized as a restaurant, If the merchant category for the purchase is not identified. This may happen when the transaction information we receive does not come directly from the merchant, for example, when the purchase is made (i) using your payment account with a third party, or (ii) using your Card at an online retailer that sells goods and services of other merchants, or (iii) if the merchant uses a third party payment service (such as a card reader attached to a mobile phone).
5% bonus earn rate applies for the first 6 months of Card membership, up to a maximum of $5,000 in purchases (equal to $250 cash back). If the bonus earn rate of 5% applies to a purchase, the 1.25% earn rate will not also apply to the same purchase. Cash back rebates are earned on eligible purchases (less credits and returns) provided your account is in good standing. Cash back is applied as a credit to your account annually. Interest, fees, balance transfers, Amex cheques and charges for travellers cheques and foreign currencies are not purchases and do not earn cash back.
2. This offer is only available to new American Express® Gold Rewards Cardmembers. For current or former American Express® Gold Rewards Cardmembers, we may approve your application, but you will not be eligible for the welcome bonus. Offer subject to change. To qualify for the Welcome Bonus you must have at least $500 in net purchases posted to your account in your first 3 months of Card Membership. Account must be in good standing. Please allow up to eight weeks for the Welcome Bonus to be awarded. 25,000 Membership Rewards Points = 25,000 Aeroplan Miles. As per Aeroplan's current reward chart, 25,000 Aeroplan Miles are currently enough for a round-trip long-haul flight reward in economy class within Canada or to the Continental US with Aeroplan ClassicFlight Rewards (applicable fees and taxes are additional). 3. This offer is only available to new Platinum® Card Cardmembers. For current or former Platinum® Card Cardmembers, we may approve your application, but you will not be eligible for the welcome bonus. Account must be in good standing. To qualify for the 50,000 Bonus Membership Rewards points, you must have at least $1,000 in net purchases posted to your account in your first 3 months of Cardmembership. Purchases must be posted to your account on or before your three month anniversary date. Please allow up to six weeks for the welcome Bonus to be awarded.
